Lot 23
U.S., 1861, 5¢ brown, First Design (Scott 57), deep rich color and impression, a truly insignificant "small corner crease at bottom right" which is in fact the corner perforation. A truly brilliant stamp, Very Fine for this issue.Census No 57-0 G-07., ex Pratt, 1954 Foundation Cert #5005 sound, 2010 Foundation Cert #490924. Scott $30,000
The 5¢ has been the only value of the "Premiere Gravures" that carries a catalogue value based on a stamp "with small faults" as so few copies are sound. Our study has found only six o.g. copies that are equal or better than the example presented here.
