The distinguished Moses Brown (1728-1836) was the co-founder of Brown University with his brother. He was an abolitionist, an industrialist and owned textile mills, one of which was the first water-powered mill in America. He outlived three wives.
The letter from St. Petersburg contains specific information on the contents of American ships leaving and their destinations, for the year 1797. Reference is made to the G.B. - France and the France - U.S. Wars, recommendations of products and requests that the sender's firm, "Edward James Smith & Co" (a mercantile company) that they may do more business with Brown. An informative read.
