1847, 5¢ red brown, good to large margins all around, probably sheet margin at left, extremely fine, tied by blue PHILADELPHIA MAR 31 c.d.s. to 1849 folded letter bearing matching c.d.s. to Washington D.C. (Scott 1).

The letter is addressed to lawyer William M. Meredith who had just become Secretary of the Treasury (under Taylor) 3 weeks earlier. The letter acknowledges Mr. Meredith declining a case because of his position. Historically Sec.
