Lot 152

Hawaii, U.S. Hawaii: Used to Maine: 1866 5c blue, fine tied by seldom seen fancy cork cancel (similar to Meyer-Harris #42) on 1869 cover to Elisha Allen in Bangor, Maine, with U.S. 1868 F. Grill 10c green tied by quartered cork. This is correctly franked for Hawaiian Steam Service, and sailing records show that the Idaho cleared Honolulu on November 27, 1869 arriving at S.F. on December 9 (mail was postmarked December 10 … Gregory); the absence of both a Honolulu date stamp and an oval Steam Service hand stamp raises the possibility that this cover was carried on a non-contract sailing in proximity. A clear San Francisco Cal Dec 10 c.d.s. ties the 10c and there is an additional BANGOR ME. DEC 20 c.d.s. and small quartered cork duplex receiving c.d.s. Fresh and very fine, a very attractive and rare usage, Ex Emerson, Krug, Honolulu Advertiser, Foundation Cert. (1962) (Scott Haw. 32, U.S.96).
Est. Cash Val. $1,000 - 1,250.
